She appears in front of Watanuki for the first time in chapter 85—where she is seen catching a gold fish and eating it happily. When she notices Watanuki, she floats down and informs him that everyone is talking about him in her world and that his eye is being fought over. She said that she wanted the eye, too, but didn’t pursue it because “that girl” would get angry with her. And with that cryptic meeting, she bounds off after another gold fish, leaving poor Watanuki dazed and confused. Her second appearance is in chapters 109 and 110, where she literally falls on top of Watanuki because of the heat. Maru and Moro then try to help the overheated cat out by spraying her with water, which, obviously, was not a wise thing to do. After all this is said and done, Yuuko gives Neko Musume a hat that cools her down in exchange for information. Because of the freedom cats possess and their ability to wander around without intervention, cats are very helpful informants. Yuuko tells Watanuki, “Whether it’s in this world or that world, they are aware of all news.” So, as payment for the hat she received from Yuuko, Neko Musume shows Watanuki the oldest well she knows with water that has not been contaminated by tap water. She, of course, does no work, merely shows Watanuki the location, as that was her price and nothing more. Once back at Yuuko’s shop, she pounces on Watanuki after he makes some twirling and exaggerated movements, capturing her cat-like attention. After that, we see no more of her, as of the current chapter. Personality: Neko Musume is a cat, and, therefore, acts very much like a cat. In chapters 109 and 110, while Yuuko and Watanuki talk, she is in the background cheerfully batting at pieces of string and hair that the black Mokona teases her with. She pounces, swipes, bats, and does other general, playful cat things. Aside from the slight playfulness of her nature, however, she is quite serious. She collects and knows information, and this information is even relevant to Yuuko, demonstrating her higher intelligence and ability. She’s unsympathetic for people she doesn’t know—she hardly bats an eye at the fact Watanuki is responsible for carrying all the water back and forth from Yuuko’s shop and flat out refuses to help him (and never hesitates to let him know, either.) But, yet, at the same time, she doesn’t pursue his eye because she doesn’t want to upset “that girl” suggesting that she values and respects the opinions of people that she is close to and/or respects as individuals. | |||||||||
